The HO scale was created in the United Kingdom during the 1930s; however, it did not become popular in the United States until the 1950s, where hobbyists were demanding more realistic model trains. HO scale models are smaller than the O scale models. This allows modelers to fit more railroad tracks and scenery into a small area.
In the 1960s some of the biggest manufacturers including, Gilbert (maker of American Flyer) and Lionel, started making the HO scale trains.
Over the years the HO scale trains have become the most popular size in North American and much of Europe. HO locomotives, rolling stock (cars or carriages), buildings, and scenery are available from a large number of manufacturers at a variety of price points.
Some of the top manufacturers are Atlas, Athearn, Bachmann, Walthers, Lionel, IHC, Hornby, Fleischmann, Tyco, Brass Imports and many others…
